The Glass Castle post 2
After the first couple chapters I was very intrigued with the book and I wanted to keep reading. What I have learned so far shows me that her parents are not good role models and seem to not be interested in what is best for Jeannette. So after Jeannette returns from the hospital I was surprised to read that her parents let her keep cooking hot dogs with out their supervision. A quote that supports this that I liked was, “Good for you,” Mom said when she saw me cooking. “You’ve got to get right back in the saddle. You can’t live in fear of something as basic as fire.” This quote tells me that her parents are different from other parents and that their children’s safety isn’t the most important thing to them. Also just to remind you, she is still only four years old. Her dad then starts to eventually show her fire tricks that are very dangerous for a young child. He teaches her how to pass her finger through a flame and Jeannette started to do this all of the time. She then started to steal matches from her dad and she would go behind the garage and light them. Whenever they would go out or get to hot on her fingers she would curse that she picked up from her dad. All of these incidents prove and show that her parents are not what I would consider mature and effective parents.
